Week 39 First Grade News

Spanish Language Arts

We will have a final meeting Thursday morning at 10am on Zoom with both teachers.

This week we will read a variety of Spanish books.

Our objectives will be:

  • ready various books in Spanish (Epic! collection assignment)
  • Write about your favorite Spanish book (Who are the characters? What is the setting? What happens in the beginning? The middle? The end?)
  • listen to Ms.Ivary read the book Si es yes and No is no. (use the comprehension skill summary while reading)
  • focus on using correct spelling in sentences on BOTH our Vamos a corregir pages
  • practice using the reading strategy summary while reading this week

Videos for the remaining Vamos a corregir pages will be available on Google Classroom this summer.

Matemáticas

This week we will finish working on Chapter 19 El dinero.

Our objectives will be:

  • count money in cents us to $1 using the ‘count on’ strategy
  • choose the correct value of coins when buying items
  • use different combinations of coins to show the same value
  • add to find the cost of items and subtract to find the change
  • solve real world problems involving addition subtraction of money

We will be finishing our whirl wind trip through the human anatomy and its systems this week.  Students will continue to work with Brainpop Jr. and Epic! books to watch lessons and do activities.

       Digestive system

Our objectives are to:

  • Identify the muscular and nervous systems
  • Recall basic facts about the muscular and nervous systems
  • Understand the importance of exercise to your health

History and Geography

This week we finish our unit with Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery finally making it to the Pacific Ocean.  Our journal activity this week will be to make an entry as if we were one of the members of the expedition. Students will also be taking their assessment this week.

  • Locate the Rocky Mountains, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers,  and the Louisiana Territory on a map
  • Explain the reasons that Lewis and Clark went on their expedition
  • Understand that there were many, many Native American tribes already living in the Louisiana Territory before the Lewis and Clark expedition
  • Recall basic facts about Lewis and Clark’s encounters with Native Americans

For the remainder of the school year we will be learning about the human body.  All of our lessons will be through Brainpop Jr.   These will be supported by books found in our Epic! book collection titled “The Human Body”

Our objectives will be to:

  • Identify the skeletal, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems
  • Recall basic facts about the skeletal, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems

This week Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery will be leaving the Great Plains and venturing into the Red Cedar forests and the Rocky Mountains.  Sacagawea will get a pleasant surprise when the group encounters the Shoshone. Students will be writing about Sacagawea in their journals this week.

  • relate repeated addition to multiplication and relate sharing equally to division
  • use objects or pictures to show division as finding the number of equal groups

Science

                 So many fossils!

This week we will be learning about the fossils of La Brea Tar pits in Los Angeles as we finish up our science domain. Our activities will be doing riddles for core content and writing a letter to a paleontologist or a geologist. We will be taking our assessment on Friday.

The class will be learning about Thomas Jefferson’s exploration plan of the land west of the Mississippi and how he enlisted an expedition led by Lewis and Clark.  We will be reading about how the journey began this week.

We will be learning all about the importance of the Louisiana Territory to the expansion of the United States. We will be learning about the role James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, and France had in the Louisiana Purchase.  Students will have the opportunity to do some mapping activities.

This week we will be reviewing what we have learned in our unit ‘Birth of Our Nation’.  Students will be adding to pages to their History folders.  We will also be creating a class book based on the book My America, the Beautiful.  We will take a unit assessment on Friday.
