This week we will hear the story ‘The Giant Turnip’ and do a project illustrating the life cycle of a turnip.  We will also be learning a little about conservation in honor of Earth Day last week.

Our objectives will be to:

  • understand that seeds are the beginning of new turnip plants
  • explain that turnips grow when they have water and light, and can grow to be different sizes
  • identify the root of a turnip, and understand that the turnip’s roots and leaves are eaten by people
  • understand ways that you can be a conservationist

This week we will hear two stories: ‘The Little Gray Pony’ and ‘The Merry Wives’.  We will be listening for different tradespeople in each.  You will have a chance to play a game to help you remember about the tradespeople you have learned about.

Our objectives will be to:

  • recognize the necessity of heating objects before a blacksmith can shape them
  • identify reasons why people who lived in the country traveled to town
  • describe the different kinds of tradespeople in colonial towns
  • identify and associate with the appropriate trade, the tools used by colonial tradespeople
  • describe the tailor, carpenter, and blacksmith in a colonial town
