   Life cycle of a turnip from ‘The                    Gigantic Turnip’

Science

This next week we will be learning more about plants, specifically about flowers and their purpose.  Students will have a chance to watch a short video on bees. In Brainpop Jr. we will continue to learn about conservation.

Our objectives will be to:

  • Identify the petals on a flower
  • Describe how bees collect nectar and pollen
  • Understand how bees make and use honey

        Seed experiment

  • Describe the important role bees play in plant pollination
  • Understand what the terms extinct and endangered mean

History & Geography

Next week we will be learning about teachers and schools during colonial times.  Students will also get to hear the story ‘Stone Soup’.  They will be invited to

     Tradespeople charades

create their own “stone” soup as an enriching project.

         Carpenters can build                      hummingbird houses 

Our objectives will be to:

  • Describe a teacher as a townsperson responsible for educating young children
  • Identify some characteristics of colonial common schools
  • Compare and contrast common schools with today’s schools
  • Recall the different kinds of tradespeople found in a colonial town

This week we will hear the story ‘The Giant Turnip’ and do a project illustrating the life cycle of a turnip.  We will also be learning a little about conservation in honor of Earth Day last week.

  • understand that seeds are the beginning of new turnip plants
  • explain that turnips grow when they have water and light, and can grow to be different sizes
  • identify the root of a turnip, and understand that the turnip’s roots and leaves are eaten by people
  • understand ways that you can be a conservationist

This week we will hear two stories: ‘The Little Gray Pony’ and ‘The Merry Wives’.  We will be listening for different tradespeople in each.  You will have a chance to play a game to help you remember about the tradespeople you have learned about.

Next week our focus will be on the life cycle of plants.  Students will have a couple of lessons, a variety of books to read, and project they can work on.

We will be learning about house builders; bricklayers, masons, and carpenters as well as the blacksmith next week.  The class will have the opportunity to “visit” a blacksmith in his workshop, read several fiction and nonfiction books to go along with our lessons, and do a project or two.

Our objectives for the week:

  • describe the bricklayer, mason, and carpenter in a colonial town
  • describe the blacksmith in a colonial town
  • explain the essential role of the blacksmith in making tools for other tradespeople
  • identify, and associate with the appropriate trade, the tools used by bricklayers masons, carpenters, and blacksmiths

English Zoom Meetings

Kindergarten individual Zoom meetings are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday between  1 – 2:30,  or unless otherwise arranged.

Our whole class Zoom meetings are on Fridays at 1 pm.  Check  Google  classroom for link.

Week 29 Kindergarten News

Learning about George Washington Carver

During Spring Break we will not upload any new assignments. Students can use this time to catch up on past assignments and explore some of the enrichment activities listed in our Google Classroom. We will continue to have our Spanish and English  Zoom meetings.  Our English whole class Zoom meeting will be a special sharing meeting with crazy hair on Friday.

When we return from Spring Break we will continue with our Plants science domain. The students will have opportunities to do an experiment and a project along with their reading/listening assignments and activities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our objectives for April 13 – 17 will be to:

  • Identify the root, stem, leaf, flower, and seed of a plant
  • explain that roots anchor the plant and take in water and nutrients
  • explain that stems support the plant and carry water and nutrients to the various parts of the plant

  • understand that plants are living things
  • understand that seeds are the beginning of new plants

   Using the a loom like a weaver

Our next lessons  will be about tradespeople: Dressmakers, Tailors, Hatters, and Cobblers.  The class will get to hear the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker.  The students will do a project where they can design their own piece of clothing or shoe and list the trades person who would make it along with the material and tools they would use.

 

 

Our objectives for April 13 – 17 will be to:

  • Weaving with sticks and yarn

    Identify, and associate with the appropriate trade, the tools used by these tradespeople

  • understand that the ready-made clothing was not available for sale in colonial shops; clothing was made to order according to the exact measurements of each person
  • explain how the tradespeople in colonial towns saved farming families time and effort

 

English Sight Words

Our words for the week: goes, must.  Students will read the poems ‘Bee’ and ‘I’m a Little Honeybee’ and find the new sight words for the week along with other sight words they recognize.

Our goals for April 13 – 17 will be to do:
