English Social Studies and Science
What a fun week with Dr. Seuss! We did lots of seussical activities as well as regular routines.
Social studies with Ms. Marci
This week in our unit on Early American Civilizations we finished our read-alouds on the Inca civilization. We watched a video about the Inca empire and worked on making our quipu. Next week we will have our assessment and culminating activities.
Our objectives were to:
• understand that the Inca established a far-ranging Empire in the Andes Mountains of Peru and Chile many, many years ago
• recall that Machu Picchu is an Incan city
• understand that much of what we know about the Inca is because of the work of archaeologists
• identify the area in which the Incas lived
• understand that the Inca had a religion, leaders, town, and farming
We started our study of The War of 1812 by examining the causes and the actual events leading up to 1812. We added to the timeline we started in our unit about The Constitution. The students worked together to prepare skits illustrating some of the problems America was having in dealing with the British and the Native Americans and what a party hosted by Dolley Madison must have been like! We then debated whether or not to declare war on Great Britain. President James Madison DID declare war at the end of class.
Science
This week we in we learned what human beings are doing to harm insects and why this matters.
Our objectives this week were to:
• explain that insects are the largest group of animals on Earth
• explain that there are many different types of insects
• identify what makes an insect a bug
• list ways in which insects can be helpful to people
• list ways in which insects can be harmful to people
Spelling:
We took our spelling test on Friday, another good one. Our spelling activity was to use our sorts to make the stripes in the Cat in the Hat hat. For handwriting we worked one the letters g, h, and reviewed a, b, and d. Our phonics this week was reviewing the subject and predicate in a sentence as well as using proper punctuation. In our journals we wrote about our favorite way to read a book and which Dr. Seuss book we like the most and why.
Our idiom this week: The Dr. Seuss quote “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
Math
This week in the red group, with Maestra Ivary, we worked with meaning of sum and mental addition. Our objectives were:
- add numbers with up to 3 digits mentally with and without regrouping
- relate sumar (sum) to the addition operation
We have also been focusing on underlining or highlighting important information within each question to help us find the answer.
