Lectura

At the end of the week, students were assigned to read chapter 8 from our book, Con carino Amalia, and be prepared to discuss in class on Monday.

Understand and learn how to compare and contrast two objects or ideas, in oral and written form.

Participate actively during class discussions using evidence from the text to support claims.

Using our senses, generate descriptive language to use accurately in different contexts, for example, when describing an object.

Apply reading comprehension strategies such as making connections, clarifying, summarizing, visualizing.

Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a context (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).

Ciencias

Without a doubt, the highlight of this week was our OMSI field trip, but before that, these were the concepts discussed in class. Focus Question: How can you explain why we see some natural objects only in the night sky, some only in the day sky, and some at both times? How could you describe the size of and distance between Earth, the Moon, and the Sun?

This week we continued with our investigation 2, Planetary Systems. Students worked together to build a model of the Earth/Moon/Sun system. They applied many math and computing skills such as determine the distance and converting measuring units as well explain the concepts of  diameter, angles. Students analyzed the Moon observations to discover the sequence of changes. They learn the names for the four specific phases and the intermediate phases. Students used a light source and sphere to simulate an Earth–Moon– Sun system and explore the cause of Moon phases. There are so many questions that came up during this investigation. Students wanted to expand their understanding of concepts by formulating a question and starting a mini-research project.  This information will serve us so well as we continue to make meaning and construct explanations of the infinite  mysteries of the cosmos.

Character Education

This month we will continue to add ribbons to our school Kindness Wreath but we will now focus on Teamwork and Cooperation.  We will be doing many great activities to show the importance of how communication and cooperation make teamwork so much better! We encourage you to point out how everyday tasks at home are made easier with a little bit of teamwork.

Preschool Week 4

This week we completed our “Mi Familia” unit. This month was amazing! The kids did a great job learning family vocabulary such as;

Mamá-mother,

Papá-father,

Bebé-baby,

Hermano-brother,

Hermana-sister,

Abuela-grandmother,

Abuelo-grandfather.

As well, we learned more about our students and their awesome families through their family’s picture and stories that they brought to class!

This week we read the book “¿El Canguro Tiene Mamá? by Eric Carle. In this book we met little joey bouncing in mother kangaroo’s pouch, watched little cubs prance around their mother lion, and swim with a baby dolphin calf in the deep blue sea. Kids know that all moms love their children. Also, they learned new vocabulary:

Canguro/kangaroo

León / lion

Jirafa / giraffe

Cisne / swan

Pingüino / penguin

Zorro / fox

Delfin / dolphin

Cordero / lamb

Oso / bear

Elefante / elephant

Mono / monkey

We had a lot of fun with our different activities such as, paper plate kangaroos, counting kangaroos’ game, kangaroo crown, as well, coloring, cut, glue with different materials.

English Sight Words of the Week

find, from, each, fun, for, go

We are working on proper hand washing as a whole school!  Ask your child about their glitter-hand washing lesson with Ms. Bre.  We are also working on keeping our hands and other items out of our mouths and noses.  We would really appreciate your reinforcement of this at home please!

Music with Ms. Nadia

Music is a great way to get the wiggles out and learn something new! This month we learned about rhythm through tapping sticks, hitting drums, and shaking jingle bells. We were introduced to quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests, which we played in patterns on the percussion instruments. We also read a book called Max Found Two Sticks about a boy who saw music in the world around him. The kids followed along by repeating the rhythms in the story.

Some of my favorite parts of class are the songs we make up, such as the Watermelon Song and I Know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. We also went on a repeat-after-me Bear Hunt song adventure, in which the class gave suggestions as to what should happen next. We waded through a field of porcupines on stilts, crawled through a herd of jellyfish, and wore snowshoes through quicksand. The whole hunt turned into a tea party with the bear, who saved us from a megalodon! This group’s imagination and energy makes it fun to sing with them every week!

Art with Ms. Kelly

I’m really enjoying working with this class and getting to know the new students in this group and it’s wonderful to have Ms. Laura helping out each week during art!

The first week we reviewed our Art Class procedures and rules, and then each student made an Abstract Name Design using markers and crayons. We looked at the artwork of the American artist Stuart Davis who used lots of letters and numbers in his abstract paintings during the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Our next project included learning about Prehistoric Cave Art. We looked at pictures of cave paintings from Spain, France, and South Africa. The students learned about how people from thousands of years ago created beautiful pictures of animals, using charcoal and natural colors from soil and rocks.

The students made their own textured surface by crumpling up grocery bags, and they learned to use basic shapes to draw a deer, horse or rhino. Their wonderful Cave Paintings are on the bulletin board at school!

We welcomed the season of Fall by learning how to draw and paint a “birds-eye view” of a plate of apples. We talked about our state of Washington being the largest producer of apples in the country! The students observed the shapes and colors of real apples, and they started on a painting that they’ll finish next week.

Week 4 Kindergarten News

La Lectura

What a great week full of new Spanish words! We became more familiar with a lot of new words in our weekly focus book: “Boomer goes to school” (Boomer va a la escuela):

  • Meneaba (wiggled)

  • Sacudida (shook)

  • Se meneó (it wiggled)

  • Compartir (share)

  • Recreo (recess)

  • Correa (leash)

  • Arte (art)

  • Música (music)

  • Círculo (circle)

The children recognized the vocabulary through the illustrations in the book and highlighting questions about the vocabulary. For example: What does share mean to you? ¿Qué es para ti compartir?, Why was Boomer wagging? ¿Por qué Boomer se meneaba?, What activities are done when students are in the circle? ¿Qué actividades hacen los estudiantes cuando están en el círculo?

Using these questions we worked with new vocabulary in the book that we started using at the end of the week: “Un oso nuevo en la escuela” (A new bear at the school). In this book the children could identify the emotions and feelings of the bear from the illustrations of the book when it arrived at school for the first time.

We studied the names and shapes of A, E, I , O, U, P, M, S , L, T, D, R,  C.

Continuing with rhyming, the little ones identified and made rhymes with the help of a fun game. This game consisted of sitting in a circle and playing “The ship is loaded with______” (“Viene un barco cargado de ______”). I mentioned a word and your child must say a word that rhymes. Example: Sombreros-Fruteros (Hat-fruit).

The words of the day this week were: UN (a) – UNA (a), The children made sentences using these words. They love to contribute ideas as well as draw related images to the sentences. They then wrote those sentences in their notebooks.

Las matemáticas

This week we continued working with the numbers to 19. We are continuing to practice correct formation of the strokes, forming groups, as well as odd and even identification. The children learned another fun way to recognize the numbers and quantities that they represent, they made a special activity: “ How many fingers are there?”.

Science

       Sewing corn

We continued our science domain on Farms. This week we learned more about crops and heard the story of The Little Red Hen.

Our weekly objectives were to:

• describe the farmers job
• describe how some food comes from farms as crops
• identify crops as plants grown on farms for use as food
• name some of the crops that are grown on farms
• sequence the seasonal rhythm of planting, growing, and harvesting
• identify bread as a product from wheat

         ¨One Two Buckle My Shoe¨

History & Geography

We finished our nursery rhymes this week and began to read fables.  The class has done such a great job memorizing the poems and recognizing rhyming pairs.

Just a reminder Robot Binders come home on Friday and should return on Monday. Book bags come home on Monday and should return on the following Monday. Thanks again for your help.

Our weekly objectives were to:
• listen to and understand” Baa Baa Black Sheep”, “One Two Buckle My Shoe”, “Humpty Dumpty”, “The Tortoise and the Hare”, and “The Lion and The Mouse”.
• identify rhyming pairs when listening to poems
• find and circle word wall words in copies of the rhymes.
• retell the events of the poems and fables

English Sight Words of the Week

Health

We had a great hand washing lesson, presented by Ms. Bre. We are really focusing on proper hand washing, making sure to get all those pesky germs off.  Also, we are working on keeping our hands out of our mouths and noses (parental reinforcement is greatly appreciated here!).

Music with Ms. Nadia

Music is a great way to get the wiggles out and learn something new! This month we learned about rhythm through tapping sticks, hitting drums, and shaking jingle bells. We also read a book called “Max Found Two Sticks” about a boy who saw music in the world around him. The kids followed along by repeating the rhythms in the story.

One of my favorite parts of class is our weekly musical adventure with Bartholomew the Bear Cub. We all work together to tell a story through songs, sharing suggestions about what should happen next. One day, the bear went over the mountain, met a dragon, and rode a cheetah! The next week he was working on the railroad when he found the cheetah and helped her reunite to her cub. This past week, the bear set up a beach for his cheetah friend at the bus stop and the wheels on the bus went round and round until it got a flat tire, and the tires had to be replaced with beach balls. Other favorite parts include Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes and The Itsy Bitsy Spider (both in Spanish and English); freeze dancing; and ABC and YMCA. This group’s excitement and enthusiasm make it fun to sing with them each week!

Art with Ms. Kelly

I’m really enjoying getting to know this wonderful Kindergarten class! Here’s what we’ve been working on in September:

Art Class Procedures and Mosaic Names

The first day we focused on our procedures for Art Class, including being aware of our classmates’ “bubbles” as we sit on the carpet, walking quietly to the tables, etc. The students are doing a great job listening and following directions!

On the first day or Art, the students used small paper “tiles” to make a colorful mosaic design of their name.

Robot Collage

The students learned how to cut out basic shapes from construction paper to create a robot picture, to go along with their classroom theme. Each robot was unique, creative and fun!

Scarecrow Collage

We continued our focus on using basic shapes to create a figure – this time a scarecrow. This ties in with their Farm Unit and Autumn themes.

The students learned how to create a simple background using tempera paint, and then they created wonderful scarecrows to glue onto their landscapes.

We’re so thankful to have Ms. Laura helping out each Wednesday!

Week 4 2nd/3rd Grade News

La Lectura

This we read a great story about two neighbor girls who build “competing” tree houses.  They learned the lesson that they would enjoy their lonely treehouses more if they shared them with each other.  This story provided a great opportunity for us to work on our comparing and contrasting skills. Our weekly objectives were:

  • to test on spelling words with Z.
  • to compare and contrast details from a story.
  • to identify cause and effect.
  • to use context clues to help us identify unknown words.
  • to read aloud with a partner *and use context clues to help with comprehension.

The Week 3 Reading award was well received! (And coveted, even during Prodigy practice.)

Las matemáticas

This week was all about multiplication facts (through our 3-minute tests), mental calculation and rounding!

I have challenged your children to complete the rounding section of Prodigy before Monday.  We have completed several fun and meaningful tasks to help them better understand numbers on a number line and how to use them for rounding. Can’t wait to see how everyone stacks up on Monday!  Class tickets are on the line for this challenge!

Students have finalized their question and moved into the actual research.  They can bring in books or take notes from books/videos/interviews at home.  To be clear, they do not need to complete any of this project at home but they are welcome to continue their research if they want.

Research has begun! We’ve added a few more times to our Genius Hour lap books.

Science

This we our objectives were to:

  • Identify the Andromeda Galaxy as the closest spiral galaxy in our universe.
  • Describe gravity
  • Describe the effects gravity has on Earth, within the solar system, and in the universe.
  • Describe the characteristics of stars
  • Compare and contrast our sun and other stars
  • Describe a galaxy as a very large cluster of many stars
  • Explain what constellations are and how they are useful
  • Recognize and name important constellations in the hemisphere in which you live

History & Geography

A huge thank you to Mr. Brian for coming in to our classroom on Friday and sharing his experience as a tugboat captain and ship pilot on the Columbia!  This was such an interesting and informative presentation relating to using rivers for transportation.

This week our goals were to:

  • List three dangers that boat captains must look out for on rivers
  • Describe the dangers on the Mississippi River and the Ob River
  • Describe the locations of the Mississippi River and the Ob River
  • Understand the meaning of the following domain-specific vocabulary.

Music with Ms. Nadia

Music is a great way to get the wiggles out and learn something new! This month we learned about rhythm through tapping sticks, hitting drums, striking triangles, clicking claves, shaking maracas, sliding sandpaper blocks, and jingling jingle bells. We were introduced to quarter and eighth notes and quarter rests, which we played in patterns on the percussion instruments. We also read a book called Max Found Two Sticks about a boy who saw music in the world around him. The kids followed along by repeating the rhythms in the story.

Some of my favorite moments of class are when students’ suggestions become a reality. The past week we went on a repeat-after-me Bear Hunt song adventure in which we ended up chopping down a tree to cross a river, riding an old abandoned railway car over a canyon, and running through a fossil museum. It was quite the experience! This class abounds with creativity and gusto which makes it fun to sing with them each week!

Art with Ms. Kelly

I’m enjoying working with this fun and creative class!

The first week we reviewed our Art Class procedures and rules, and then each student made an Abstract Name Design using markers and crayons. We looked at the artwork of the American artist Stuart Davis who used lots of letters and numbers in his abstract paintings during the 1940’s and 1950’s.

The students learned about Roman Mosaics for our next project. We looked at examples of ancient Roman mosaics made from tiles, rocks, and glass. Ms. Laura, who helps out each Wednesday in Art, brought in a beautiful hand-made mosaic clock for the students to see. The students then used a variety of papers to cut out their own “tiles” to make a mosaic fish. Their wonderful “Modern Mosaics” are on the bulletin board at school.

We welcomed the season of Fall by learning how to draw and paint a “birds-eye view” of a plate of apples. The students learned about Still Life, and the artist Paul Cezanne. Their gorgeous apple paintings will be finished next week!

Week 4 4th/5th Grade News

History & Geography

This week we continued to study the Maya, Aztec, and Inca. Our objectives were:

  • complete a summary chart of Mayan culture
  • explain how the Aztec built and controlled a powerful empire
  • describe Tenochtitlan and the surrounding landscape
  • explain how the Inca organized their empire and met the needs of the people

Mathematics

This week we began chapter 2, Whole Number Multiplication and Division. Our objectives were:

  • use a calculator to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers
  • multiply numbers by 10, 100, or 1,000
  • multiply numbers up to 4 digits by multiples of 10, 100, or 1,000
  • use rounding to estimate products

English

This week we began our first writing study Narrative Writing. Our objectives were:

  • understand the writing process we will use throughout the year
  • identify the Elements of Narrative writing
  • pre-write for our narrative writing pieces
  • We also began our new spelling routine this week

Lectura

This week’s essential question: Como la historia nos enseña sobre la herencia cultural? We explored possible answers reading the informational text, Cinco de mayo. We will continue reading this piece next week. These were our objectives for literacy this week:

  • Explain  the characteristics of expository texts.
  • Establish purposes, audiences and the need for  different genres: expository and fiction, for example.
  • Apply reading comprehension strategies such as making connections, clarifying,  summarizing.
  • Study the spelling patterns of words with stress on the antepenultimate syllable.
  • Learn about adjectives and adverbs and use them in different sentence types.
  • Write a summary of a text.
  • Identify main ideas and events and distinguish them from supporting details.

This week we read the first three chapters of our book, Con carino Amalia. Students did a fantastic job keeping up with their reading assignments and participating actively in our book club discussions. The main theme this week was changes. Changes are not always easy, and the main character of our story is having to face difficult challenges that are making her feel sad and troubled. As we see in nature (and is mentioned in our story), contemplating the beautiful changes of the leaves in the Fall is a reminder that changes can also be good and beautiful. Students have established some deep connections to the story. We can’t wait to continue with our book discussions next week.

**Students have been assigned to read chapter 4 this weekend and come prepared to share their connections on Monday.**

Objectives during our book club:

  • Determine a central idea of a text  and how it is conveyed through particular details; distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
  • Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a context (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).
  • Participate actively during class discussions using evidence from the text to support claims.
  • Follow reading calendar.

Ciencias

Focus Question:  How could you describe the size of and distance between Earth, the Moon, and the Sun?

This week we started our Investigation 2: Planetary Systems.Students grappled with the size and distance relationships among Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.  After illustrating some of these concepts on their science journals we looked at the models of the the Earth and the Moon. Students found out that the diameter of the Earth is approximately four times the diameter of the Moon. Students applied math vocabulary and computing skills such as division and multiplication, diameter, angle, measuring distance, converting units (cm, mt, km, miles). We will continue with this investigation next week as well as learning about the moon appearance.

  • The Moon is much smaller than Earth, and orbits at a distance equal to about 30 Earth diameters. If the Earth’s diameter is 12,742 kilometers, what is the distance between the Earth and the Moon?

Music with Ms. Nadia

Music is a great way to get the wiggles out and learn something new! This month we learned about rhythm through tapping sticks, hitting drums, striking triangles, clicking claves, shaking maracas, sliding sandpaper blocks, and jingling jingle bells. We reviewed half, quarter and eighth notes, along with half, quarter, and eighth rests. We played these in syncopated patterns on the percussion instruments, eventually spitting the class into sections and performing up to four different patterns at the same time! Some students were given the opportunity to create their own patterns and direct how they would like the class to perform on the instruments. Our focus song of the month was Hey Ho, Nobody’s Home, which we performed in several different ways. Students also contributed their own song suggestions, which will be implemented weekly.

Other highlights include vocal warmups about MNMs, playing the song game Down by the Banks, jamming out to the Lion King, and writing our own version of Do You Know the Muffin Man. This group’s dedication and eagerness makes it fun to sing with them every week!

Art with Ms. Kelly

I’m really enjoying working with this very creative “senior” class!

The first week we reviewed our Art Class procedures and rules, and then each student made an Abstract Name Design using markers and crayons. We looked at the artwork of the American artist Stuart Davis who used lots of letters and numbers in his abstract paintings during the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Our next project has involved learning about the Kuna People of Panama, and creating a fabric “Mola” using felt. We looked at several traditional Mola designs created by Kuna women, using an appliqué technique. The students created their own designs on paper first, and then cut out their designs from felt, using glue to attach the shapes to a background. Each student created beautiful fabric art! I’m trying to figure out a safe way to display these colorful pieces.

We are very thankful to have Ms. Stacie and Ms. Laura help out each week with this wonderful class!

Preschool Week 3

This week we continued working with our “Mi Familia” – “My Family” unit. We use this unit as a guide to continue teaching the children more about families and what makes up a family. It’s so lovely to see how the kiddos are learning in every class! We worked with reading the book “Ricitos de Oro y los Tres Osos” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. With this classic and amazing story the kids learned new Spanish words such as:

mamá oso- mama bear,

papá oso- papa bear,

bebé oso- baby bear,

casa-house,

bosque -forest,

oso- bear,

cuchara-spoon,

plato-plate,

sopa-soup,

silla-chair,

cama- bed,

pelo -hair,

niña-girl

Also, this week we introduced an “All about me” lesson. Kids did a great job describing their self in circle time. They did an amazing activity such as; draw on a piece of paper their eyes, nose, mouth and hair. They did a sequence activity, followed by recognition of three different sizes big-grande, medium-mediano, small-pequeño.   The kids enjoyed “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” book and they had a good time learning our new Spanish words. In addition, we worked on different activities to help build up their fine motor skills.

Week 3 Kindergarten News

La Lectura

This week we continued working to learn how to categorize objects, animals, persons and places. For example: Children would group the animals by the number of legs they use for walking: dogs (perros), cats(gatos), cows(vacas), horses(caballos) and pigs(cerdos). All use four legs. Chickens (pollitos), ducks (patos), and birds (pájaros) use two legs. All children practiced grouping animals such as pets, wild animals and farm animals.

The little ones identified and did rhymes with images shown to them, for example: gato-pato (cat-duck), Ana-rana (Ana-frog) espinaca-vaca(spinach-cow).

We continued practicing writing letters and learning the names as well as the sound of m, p, s and l.

We read the book “Boomer va a la escuela” (Boomer goes to school) where the students saw the activities of school through the eyes of Boomer, a dog. This book describes a day in Kindergarten with a twist, it shares one important feature with most kindergartners, he doesn’t know much about school. What better role model for apprehensive beginners! Key concepts to be explored were:

  • School can be fun, even though it is sometimes confusing.

  • School has a unique set of routines that we need to learn.

The students enthusiastically participated in telling some things that they have learned during our time in school and how that relates to Boomer the dog. Likewise, through this story, the children got to know new words: bus (autobús), hallway (pasillo), desk (mesa), leash (correa), backpack (mochila), breakfast (desayuno), lunch (almuerzo), classroom (salón de clases).

The little ones were very excited when it was time to talk about their family. For this activity they showed their family photos and using some words in Spanish, they presented their families to their classmates. Dad (Papá), Mom (Mamá), Brother (Hermano), Sister (Hermana), Baby (Bebé).

It was a very fun and good time for them.

We had some parents asking about Spanish letter sounds. Here is the link for the Youtube video to help you study Spanish initial sounds of letters with your children. https://youtu.be/LYeM6u18ucQ

Las matemáticas

This week the students learned to recognize numbers from 7 to 13, they practiced strokes to learn how to write these numbers, the amount they represent and whether the number is even or odd. We practiced with tallies and dominoes, making fun games where children learn to recognize the amount that each number represents.

The children had a great time and get excited to learn Math in this fun way.

Learning to use tallies!

Tallies are used a LOT in class!

Science

                                               Cows!

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Curriculum Night.  It was so nice to see you all there and to share some of the special things that your kiddos are doing in class.

We continued our science domain on Farms. This week we finished cows, learned about pigs, sheep, and began crops.

Our weekly objectives were to:

• explain what a farm is
• describe the farmers job
• Identify some animals on a farm and the sounds they make
• describe how some food comes from farms as crops

        Nursery rhyme puppets

History & Geography

We continued on with our nursery rhymes this week. The class had fun with with a grab bag of items that they could use to identify which nursery rhyme they related to. They also made stick puppets in order to act out different rhymes and made Little Bo Peep’s flock of sheep.

Our weekly objectives were to:

• listen to and understand  Star Light Star Bright, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Hickory Dickory Dock, and Little Bo Peep
• identify rhyming pairs when listening to poems
• find and circle word wall words in copies of the rhymes.
• retell the events of the nursery rhyme
