In language arts we continued our poetry unit by acting out our poems/songs and listening for details. Our poems this week were La abejita chiquita and  La hormiguita y Ratón Perez. We also looked for examples of capitalized words and different punctuation. First graders had the opportunity to read with me a few times throughout the week.  They should be reading on a daily basis to focus on fluency. Our objectives this week were to:

  • distinguish vowel sounds /e/ and /i/ in spoken words
  • oral blending of sounds
  • writing a sentence correctly on lines using correct capitalization and punctuation (2 sentences for 1st graders)
  • use words of the day in oral sentences (they are getting really good at this and earned another trip to the treasure box!  That’s 300 Spanish sentences to date!)

This week we continued to practice  our literacy routines. We put emphasis on personal work ethic, staying on track complying with obligations and meeting high quality standards doing our personal best.  Students are required to write daily on their planners important information to remember and homework. They are expected to bring their planners to school every day and turn in assignments when scheduled.

This week our students concluded their first diagnostic writing assignment. We wanted to give some special thanks to Maestra Ivary, Maestra Sarah and our 2nd/3rd grade class for being such a wonderful and respectful audience during our solar eclipse presentations. Our students were able to share their personal narratives and fabulous posters. We still have a few students who will be presenting on Monday! Please make sure you stop by to read the Spanish bulletin board in the hallway.

Other objectives for this week:

  • Be able to work collaboratively, take turns, and share their ideas and thoughts in a respectful manner, as well as when manipulating resources and supplies
  • Go through the writing process to write a personal narrative
  • Follow protocol to do an oral presentation in front of an audience
  • Apply grade level spelling and sentence structure accuracy
  • Verbs in simple present and simple past tense
  • Palabras agudas
  • Understand home reading expectations in Spanish

What is a shadow? How is a shadow formed? How and why does your shadow change during the day?

Students traced their shadows in the morning and afternoon, and compared the tracings. They used this information to determine the position of the Sun as it appears to move throughout the day. Students concluded that shadows are the dark areas that result when light is blocked. Shadows change during the day because the position of the Sun changes in the sky. Remarkable!

img_2402-1This week in language arts we had a lot of fun with our playful chancho. He likes to play with words by stealing their initial sound and sometimes their final sound. We worked a lot with the oral combination and separation of syllables. This is fun for the kiddos and definitely grabs their attention. We used the chancho to work on our listening skills for a directed drawing.  We then separated our names into syllables.  (Look for these on the hall bulletin board next week.)

We are working hard to remember our correct letter formations: top-down. Sometimes a student is sent home with extra practice or to finish something they didn’t quite have enough time for in class.  (They won’t receive homework unless they didn’t use their time wisely in class.) This week we reviewed letter formations for Bb, Cc, Ch ch, Dd.  We also worked with the following words of the day / palabras de use frecuente: en, con, qué, un.  You will see these words in their daily planner.

We’ve added our Spanish tally system and the students love it!  They got to go to the treasure box twice this week, which means they have been doing a great job using their Spanish in class!!

Matemáticas

We all had fun using our math boxes and tens frames to creat groups of objects. Kindergartners worked on identifying numbers, forming groups, filling out a tens frame correctly, matching up groups, and writing numbers correctly (top down).
First graders also worked on tens frames, using different colors to show all the different combinations we can use to add up to 10. We are working on identifying number words and making connections with greater than and less than. Some math words we focused on this week were:

  • igual – equal
  • más que– more than
  • menos que – less than
  • mayor – greater
  • menor – less

I have been so impressed with how everyone is arriving each day ready to go with their materials and eager to work on their red binders. I can’t believe it is only the second week of school, what a wonderful class we have! In social studies this week we had a nice variety of ways to learn about geography. We made a “living” map, we danced to a directions song, constructed a cork compass and created a compass rose quilt.

Our objectives this week were to
•  locate the seven continents and four oceans on a flat world map
•  recognize the geographic terms of continent, country, state, city, and island

•  find directions on a map: east, west, north, and south
•  identify the points on a compass rose
•  identify classroom cardinal directions

Science

This week in Animal Habitats we went on a local Safari looking for plants and animals that live near us. We also learned about the Arctic tundra and the Arctic Ocean and plants and animals that inhabit this area

Our objectives this week were to:
• describe what a habitat is
• Understand that living things live in habitats to which they are particularly suited.
•  Identify two characteristics of the Arctic tundra habitat
•  explain how arctic animals have adapted to the Arctic tundra habitat
•  identify the characteristics of the Arctic Ocean habitat
•  explain how Arctic animals have adapted to the Arctic Ocean habitat

English Word Work

This week the class was introduced to our spelling program and how to do their sorts. I will be working with each spelling group throughout the week on their sorts and words. In our journals this week we wrote about the Arctic tundra.
Our daily vocabulary words were: shelter, Arctic, north, south, east, west.  Our word wall words were: you, me, in, can, we, us, see, be, want

Sharing:   Several students have wanted to bring something from home to share with the class.  I wish we had the time to hear about all these special things but because we are so busy all the time we have to limit sharing time and what is being shared.  Your child may bring in an item on Fridays.  This sharing should have something to do with what we are learning about in class.  Thank you for helping your child decide if their sharing fits this criteria.

IMG_4993Establishing Our Community of Learners/Facilitators
What a wonderful first week of school we had! It was very exciting to see everybody come to school well prepared and ready to work. Maestra Paola was very impressed to find out that our students were eager to share their fun summer adventures in Spanish! We had students bring a significant object that represented their summer and do presentations to the class. If your child has not done it yet, please remind them to bring something next week, if they wish.
This week we discussed 4th/5th grade expectations, school procedures and practiced routines and transitions. Students also became familiar with their materials, binders, books and journals. Next week we will continue to learn literacy routines such as dictado, spelling, at school/at home reading expectations and word work. As a group, we identified and set our goals and worked on a plan of action for a successful year. Next week, we will be setting individual academic goals.
In connection to our Fall Science Module: Earth and Sun, we started our first writing assignment. We are writing a personal narrative about our solar eclipse experience. I wish you all could have been there to feel the electricity in the environment. The pieces are absolutely remarkable and they just got started! Please be sure to read our published pieces on our Spanish bulletin board before the end of next week.

Fall Science Module Overview

“The Earth and Sun Module provides students with experiences to explore the properties of the atmosphere, energy transfer from the Sun to Earth, and the dynamics of weather and water cycling in Earth’s atmosphere. Other experiences help students to develop and use models to understand Earth’s place in the solar system, and the interactions of Earth, the Sun, and the Moon to reveal predictable patterns—daily length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of stars in the night sky. Students gain experiences that will contribute to the understanding of crosscutting concepts of patterns; cause and effect; scale, proportion, and quantity; systems and system models; and energy and matter.”- FOSS Next Generation

Welcome to second grade History and Geography!  We started our first unit, Geography of the Americas, by matching the fifty states in the United States of America with their nicknames.  We also identified some characteristics shared by many maps, such as compass rose and map key.  For the United States and Canada, we studied and started coloring maps (noting states on the U.S. map and territories and provinces on the map of Canada), handled some actual coins from each country, listened to the national anthems and drew the flags.

Week of September 11 -15, 2017

We will continue our study of North America by learning about Mexico and The Caribbean.  We will also talk about The West Indies.

Science

Our first science domain this year will be on classification of animals. We will learn about five groups of vertebrae, why scientists classify animals into groups, and the characteristics by which they make these determinations.  In years past this has been a very exciting unit with lots of interesting activities. Our class has already come up with several things they would like to do with this domain.

Our objectives this week were to:

•  observe and describe basic characteristics of an animal

•  identify cold blooded/warm-blooded and vertebraes/invertebrates as important characteristics used to classify animals

•  explain that scientists classify animals by common or shared characteristics and that they do so in order to study animals and show relationships

English Word Work

We will begin our spelling program next week. The students took a spelling assessment on Friday. Spelling activities this year will be done at home and students will be responsible for turning in their activities on Friday for both Spanish and English. They will have a weekly spelling homework check off sheet in their Take Home Folders. This sheet will list activity choices to be done and point value for each.

Grammar this year will be a preview or review of what is being learned in Spanish Language Arts.

K /1 Week 1 News

Literatura

I am so excited to get started with your amazing children in our K/1 blend.  It was a fantastic first week and I just know it’s going to be a wonderful year! The students are very excited about our class tally system.  They receive a tally for using Spanish words and two tallies for a Spanish sentence.  Once the class has earned 100 tallies they all go to the treasure box.  They are very motivated by this and did a great job using their Spanish!!  They will surely reach 100 on Monday.

In language arts we jumped right back into correct letter formations, blending and separating syllables through clapping and repeating. We introduced our syllable puppet “Combo” and separated and combined syllables for common words we know and our own names.  Combo is a very funny chancho!

We will have leveled reading groups this year so assessments will be taking place throughout the next few weeks.  The students (and I) love this part of the day.  They rotate around through different stations and come show off their letter/sound or reading knowledge to me and then jump right back into their fun station work.

We jumped right into our afternoon routines. This week we began our math units, working with numbers up to 10. Students will identify number words, different combinations that add up to 10, as well as work on their correct formation of the written numbers.

Don’t worry if you think, “10?  My child counts to 10!”  We are doing much more than that!  We are comparing numbers, adding and subtracting to 10 and showing all the different combinations to form 10.  This solid foundation will provide a very strong foundation to build upon.

We also include math in our stations and have different groups that rotate for direct instruction time.

In social studies for the next few weeks we will be reviewing and learning about world geography.  We will talk about the Earth’s seven continents, the four major oceans, cardinal directions of North, South, West, and East, and map symbols and legends. We will also be learning geographic terms.

Our objectives this week were to

•  understand what maps and globes represent and how they are used

•  identify equator, northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, North Pole and South Pole.

•  locate on a map the seven continents and oceans

Science

Our first domain in science this year is on animal habitats.  We will learn what a habitat is, as well as learn to identify specific types of habitats and their related characteristics.  We will recognize different plants and animals as being indigenous.

Our objectives this week were to:

• describe what a habitat is

• Understand that living things live in habitats to which they are particularly suited.

English Word Work

The class did a short spelling inventory  this week and will begin our spelling program next week.  Our word wall words this week were “the” “a” and “can”.  For our 1st graders these were review words which I am happy to say they immediately recognized.
