This week we continued with our Animals theme and read Masticar, comer: Lo queen comes los animales. This is an informational photo essay about the foods that different animals eat, including plants, bugs, and other animals. We talked a little about the food chain.  The objectives of this week were:

  • to have a better understanding of informational writing.
  • to compare and contrast how animals and students eat.
  • to acquire new animal vocabulary along with verbs and adjectives to describe them.

This week we worked with place value in new ways and continued our geometry unit by working with patterns.

We also practiced drawing shapes in a directed drawing activity.  Very fun!

History & Geography

This week in the world’s 3 major religions
We learned more about Christianity and Islam.  We worked on our class chart, filling in key information that we have learned from the read aloud so far. The students have been fascinated to learn about these three religions and about all the similarities they share.

Our objectives this week were to

• identify Judaism Christianity and Islam as major monotheistic world religions
• understand that there are many different types of religions in the world
• identify that followers of Christianity are called Christian
• identify that Christians believe Jesus Christ to be the Messiah and the son of God
• demonstrate familiarity  with the story of Jesus’s life
• understand that Easter celebrates Jesus’s resurrection after his crucifixion
• demonstrate familiarity with other important Christian holidays, such as Christmas which celebrates Jesus’s birth
• recognize the cross as a symbol  of Christianity
• recognize the both Christians and Judaism follow the 10 commandments
• identify the Bible as the Christian holy book and that a Christian house of worship is called a church
• understand that Islam originated in Arabia
• identify that followers of Islam are called Muslims
• identify that Muslims believe that Moses and Jesus were prophets, but they believe that Muhammad was the last and greatest of the prophets
• demonstrate similarity with important Muslim holidays such as Ramadan
• define the crescent and star a symbols of Islam
• identify the Qur’an as the holy book of Islam and that a Muslim’s place of worship is called a mosque

This week in our Animals and Their Habitats we finished working on our sea creatures and began a class book about being a whale.  We also watched a documentary on the ocean habitat.
Our objectives this week were to:

•  understand that saltwater covers most of the earth and it is found in several oceans
•  identify and locate the oceans of the world on a globe:  Arctic Pacific Atlantic Indian, Southern
•  understand that ocean life is very diverse
•  apply the food chain to sea life in the ocean

English Word Work

20171205_105652_resizedIn spelling the Red group worked on the z sound, the Blue group focused on the initial consonant blends sc, sn, sw  Green group worked on short vowels o and a in easy CVC words .  In our journals this week we wrote a listener’s  response to the book Rainbow Fish. Our word wall words 
were: more, many, over, and new.
