Language Arts
We read a very entertaining Tall Tale this week: McBroom y el vendaval. We talked about how a tall tale portrays the adventures of a fictional character using humorous exaggerations. A tall tale relates a series of extraordinary events and challenges that are handled in inventive ways.
Our objectives for this week were to:
- develop an understanding of what coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and interjections are and how they are used. (and, but, or = coordinating)
- become familiar and comfortable with abbreviations for units of measurement (without periods) and other abbreviations (with periods) and acronyms.
- to identify author’s purpose.
- to summarize and illustrate passages read.
- write cursive letters Q and G.
Math
This week we reviewed our decimals test and began adding and subtracting decimals. Our objectives were:- add decimals up to two decimal places
- subtract decimals up to two decimal places
On Friday, we also played The Game of Life. Students had so much fun adding and subtracting their money as they went through “life”!
History and Geography
This week we studied Wu Zhao the first and only woman emperor of China. Our objectives were:- describe the social and personal pressures facing young women in ancient China
- identify detail that reveal Changan to have been a diverse, exotic capital
- recognize Wu Zhao’s extraordinary rise to political power form humble beginnings
English Language Arts
Students made their own presentation rubric this week as well as their note cards. Presentations will be on April 10th beginning at 9:15 AM.

Students who did not return their borrowed book to me this past week can return their borrowed book to the Camas Public Library.
Science
And just like that, we finished another successful science term! Students did such a fantastic job on their presentations. All their had work and dedication during this trimester paid off! I hope everyone enjoys their much deserved time off, goes on fun adventures or simply, takes to time to rest and recharge. We will be starting a new science module this spring, Magnetism and Electricity. Be ready! ~Maestra Paola
Art
During March the 3rd and 4th graders worked on a Watershed Art Project for Earth Day. Several of the students entered their artwork in the “What is a Watershed” contest which is sponsored by Clark Public Utilities. I will give an update when I know exactly what day their artwork will be on display.
The students discussed ideas with Maestra Paola during their study of watersheds, the water cycle and the environment. We looked at the wonderful artwork of Paola’s husband, Travis, who has created a mural incorporating Pacific Northwest and Native American imagery. We also looked at other ideas for watershed/landscape artwork such as tissue paper collage, line drawing, and texture rubbings. Some of the students incorporated quotes and poetry into their artwork.The students worked very hard and did a beautiful job with their unique, creative ideas.
Spring birds: Drawing and Painting. We compared a realistic Audubon bird painting with an abstract Brancusi sculpture. The students learned how to use basic shapes to draw a more realistic Western Bluebird, and they learned how to paint background shapes and colors to make beautiful little watercolor paintings. Their paintings on the bulletin board have added a touch of spring to our rainy days!
The students also had time to start on their Mothers Day art project which you will get to enjoy in a few weeks. Have a great spring break!
